We had a little situation Sunday evening when we were at David and Rebecca's for a family dinner. Just as we started eating, Alyssa noticed Christopher looking like he was asleep on the lawn. When Amy went over to check him, his eyes were wide open, but he was lethargic and couldn't answer her questions very well. Then he rolled his eyes back into his head and was gone (mentally, but he was still breathing). She carried him into the house and we decided we needed to take him to the hospital. So Quin and Matthew administered to him and Kimberly drove us to Utah Valley Hospital. He was still pretty unresponsive, crying at times, favoring his left arm, oh, and throwing up. It was weird.
They ran a bunch of tests, couldn't find anything wrong. They didn't know what to do and almost sent us home. None of us felt entirely comfortable with that idea and the emergency room doctor decided we needed to go to Primary Children's Hospital where they could do some neurological tests.
So Quin ended up driving everybody else home so they could get to bed and Kimberly took Chris and me to Primary's. By the time we got there, it had been six hours. I was so worried, didn't know what in the world could be wrong with him. But just as we got admitted, Christopher stirred and began to look around at the pictures on the walls. He was back!
We ended up having a lovely time at the hospital. All the staff were so nice to him. We were watching Sesame Street at 3 in the morning and eating popsicles. The Utah Valley nurse had given him a little stuffed blue duck (first named 'Boogly-goosey', then 'Cat') that he loved and was jumping around the bed with. The next day they ran all the tests they could think of, but everything came back saying his brain was perfectly normal. That's good, but it still leaves a big mystery. They sent us home Monday evening and told us to call back if it ever happens again.
He's been fine since, except he woke up Wednesday croupy and has had a bad cold ever since.
It seems a little miraculous, if we think about it. For one thing the timing was too strange to be a coincidence. I think we were supposed to go to Primary Children's for that testing for some reason. And Quin and I were so touched about so many people caring so much. (Rebecca drove Heidi to Provo to get the van keys. Heidi was willing to drive everybody else home and stay overnight with them and miss her classes. David made a bunch of sandwiches and apples to send to the hospital with us. Kimberly stayed with us the whole time until she saw we were really situated and comfortable--til 3 a.m.! Angela snuck in the house while everybody was at school Monday and left a HUGE plate of chocolate chip cookies on the table. Both Emilie and Rebecca mailed packages for Christopher filled with nice notes, candy and a Webkinz lion. Judith White brought dinner Monday night (corned beef and cabbage in honor of St. Patrick's Day! :} ) even though we said we didn't need it. McFarland's came to visit with an Easter basket filled with toys for Christopher. Valerie and Grandpa called and prayed and called.) But one thing in particular--Heidi's ward found out (from Heidi's roommates, I think) what was going on and at ward prayer decided to hold a fast for him. So Kimberly pointed out at midnight as Christopher was suddenly himself again, that it was just the time that a hundred or so college students had prayed for him before going to bed. Then he was discharged just as they were ending their fast.
Anyway, it was all very touching. Heidi's cute ward in particular made Dad and me choke up every time we thought of it. It leaves me with lots to think about. I want to be as nice and involved in other people's lives as all these sweet people.
I'm not sure what to think about Christopher. He's actually had 5 other strange experiences we know of where he's lost conciousness, starting when he was just almost one year old. The doctors are just shaking their heads and not knowing what to think. Cheri Burchell (in the ward) says Chris was having the visions he needs to prepare him to be prophet later. :)
Here's a note from Christopher: hjgffkrekfktkjek
Anyway, I'm not too concerned. We're in the Lord's hands. We do what we can for Him, dedicating our whole selves the best we can and He in turn does what He will with us and for us. I feel completely content with living that way. All is well.
